Grok 4.5 Debuts at Frontier — First Model to Clear Half of Real SaaS Workflows
SpaceXAI released Grok 4.5, trained on tens of thousands of NVIDIA GB300 systems and priced at $2/$6 per million tokens — roughly a quarter the cost of Anthropic’s Opus 4.8. The model debuted #1 on AutomationBench, the first to complete more than half of real SaaS workflow objectives without breaking business rules, and ranked #4 on GDPval-AA’s real-world agentic knowledge work tasks at a tenth the cost of its closest competitors.
Behind the benchmarks, SpaceXAI’s C/C++ rewrite of its training and inference stack delivers a 4x full-cycle speedup that makes a new model every month feasible — and Musk says the bespoke inference stack “isn’t even plugged in yet.” One asterisk on the trophy: the training run accidentally ingested the Cursor codebase, which included benchmark tasks. SpaceXAI disclosed the contamination and removed the data from future runs, but the affected scores remain uncertain.
Note: The model that just topped an enterprise automation benchmark isn’t available in the EU. For any procurement officer evaluating AI tools for institutional workflows, the scorecard is moving faster than the access map.

OpenAI Ships GPT-Live — Voice AI That Listens, Speaks, and Delegates Simultaneously
OpenAI released GPT-Live, a full-duplex voice model that listens and speaks at the same time while delegating complex reasoning to GPT-5.5 in the background. Unlike the previous turn-based Advanced Voice Mode, GPT-Live runs a two-layer architecture: a continuous interaction layer managing conversation flow, and a delegation layer that hands off harder problems to a frontier model without interrupting the dialogue.
GPT-Live-1 ships as the default voice model for paid ChatGPT users globally, with a mini variant for free-tier users. API access is expected soon.
Note: Full-duplex voice with background delegation is the architecture that makes AI phone lines and citizen service desks viable. The interaction no longer has to choose between being responsive and being smart.

Beijing Reverses Course — Will Let Top AI Firms Buy Limited NVIDIA H200s
China plans to allow Alibaba, ByteDance, DeepSeek, and other top AI firms to purchase a limited number of NVIDIA H200 chips, capping total shipments at under 200,000 units. The reversal is notable: Washington approved the H200 for export to China earlier this year, but Beijing deliberately blocked purchases to protect its domestic chip industry. Soaring demand from Chinese AI development — outpacing domestic production capacity — forced the policy shift. Companies must declare how many chips they need and justify the request.

Meta is building its largest data centre outside the United States: a 1 GW facility in Alberta, Canada, powered by a dedicated natural gas plant, at a cost of $9 billion. Separately, the company engineered a custom bridge chip that allows old RAM modules to function inside new servers — a response to soaring memory prices that extends the useful life of existing hardware rather than replacing it.
Note: One facility, one gigawatt, one dedicated gas plant. Any institution planning digital infrastructure is operating in a market where a single company’s energy footprint rivals a small city’s — and that company is simultaneously designing custom silicon just to avoid buying new memory sticks.

Teleoperated Humanoid Robots Perform Live Surgery — A World First Published in Nature
Two humanoid robots teleoperated by surgeons at UC San Diego completed live surgeries on large mammals, in a study published in Nature. In one procedure, a single “Surgie” robot worked alongside a human surgical assistant to perform a gallbladder removal. In the second, two robots operated side by side without human support — a robot-robot surgical team. The 1.5 m, 27 kg robots fit standard operating rooms without modification.
The broader robotics stack is maturing in parallel. Ant Group released LingBot-VLA 2.0, a general-purpose robot foundation model pre-trained on 60,000 hours of physical data across 20 different robot bodies, and 1X teased what it calls “the most advanced robotic hand in human history.”

FTC Forces John Deere to Hand Farmers Dealer-Grade Repair Tools for a Decade
John Deere settled an antitrust lawsuit brought by the FTC and five US states, agreeing to provide independent repair shops and farmers with the same diagnostic software and repair tools previously restricted to authorised dealers — for 10 years. The settlement also prohibits Deere dealers from retaliating against owners who choose independent repair. This is Deere’s second right-to-repair settlement in 2026, following a $99 million class-action agreement in April.
Note: The principle being established isn’t just agricultural. Any institution that buys complex equipment — fleet vehicles, medical devices, networked infrastructure — should be asking vendors the repair-access question before signing, not after.

Meta Tests AI Glasses That Record Everything — Possibly Without a Warning Light
Meta is testing “super sensing” prototype glasses — codenamed Aperol and Bellini — that continuously capture audio and take photos every few seconds, feeding an onboard AI that builds a running memory the user can query in natural language. The Financial Times reports the prototypes may not illuminate a recording LED during capture, eliminating the one social cue that currently tells bystanders they are being observed. Raw footage would not be stored directly; instead, metadata would be extracted and uploaded to Meta’s servers for the AI to query.
Note: No LED, no consent signal, continuous capture. The EU’s biometric and privacy frameworks were built assuming visible recording indicators as a minimum safeguard. If the indicator disappears, the regulatory model needs a new anchor.

Founders Say They’d Need 55% More Staff Without AI — but the Gains Aren’t Shared
A Harvard Business School study found that startup founders estimate they would need 55% more employees without AI — though the median is 17%, and nearly a third report no difference at all. The study’s sharpest finding: the payoff hinges on managers’ willingness to delegate to AI, not the capability of the AI itself. Organisations that restructure around AI gain; those that layer it on top of existing processes don’t.
At the macro level, the gap is widening. The IMF’s July 2026 outlook shows the top four AI hardware exporters — Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia — posted growth surprises of 4.4 percentage points above forecast in Q1, while the rest of the world came in 0.3 points below. Energy importers with limited participation in the technology value chain, including many low-income countries, saw the weakest outlooks.
Note: The bottleneck isn’t the technology — it’s the delegation. That finding scales: from the founder who won’t let the AI draft, to the ministry that won’t restructure a workflow, to the country that isn’t in the supply chain. The divergence is the same at every level.
