Claude Fable 5 produced an explicit counterexample: a polynomial map in three variables with constant Jacobian determinant that sends three distinct points to one, making inversion impossible. Stanford number theorist Jared Duker Lichtman called it “quite a remarkable result,” noting that GPT-5.6 has already proposed a refined conjecture to salvage the wreckage. Fields medalist Timothy Gowers said it is the first LLM result outside his area “big enough that I had very definitely heard of it.”

Note: This was the kind of problem that collapsed Yitang Zhang’s PhD thesis and resisted 87 years of human effort. Peer review is pending, but multiple mathematicians have independently verified the core calculations. The pattern matters more than the conjecture: AI systems are now operating at the boundary of human mathematical knowledge, not just matching solved problems at speed.

Two Sigma’s David Siegel argues this is the 1980s free-software fight replayed at higher stakes, urging that AI built with public money be open by default. Washington is now weighing a ban on cutting-edge Chinese models — while simultaneously pushing a UN “free speech” declaration that Europe reads as a direct challenge to its tech regulation framework.

Germany Launches Soofi S — Sovereign 30-Billion-Parameter Model Tops Open-Source Benchmarks in German and English

Germany’s Soofi consortium — coordinated by KI Bundesverband and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs under the IPCEI-CIS initiative — released Soofi S, a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model trained entirely on European infrastructure. The model activates roughly 3.2 billion parameters per forward pass, was trained on 27 trillion tokens across 253,000 GPU-hours on Deutsche Telekom’s Industrial AI Cloud in Munich, and leads all fully open models on aggregate benchmarks for both German and English. Its sparse architecture is designed to reduce the computational cost of long-context processing — a practical consideration for document-heavy institutional workflows.

Note: On a day when US models blocked breach forensics and Chinese models filled the gap, Germany ships a sovereign alternative. Soofi S is small by frontier standards — but it is the first German model trained entirely on German infrastructure that outperforms its weight class in both languages.

Note: Dexterity without fast learning is a lab demo. Fast learning without dexterity is a toy. Both announcements are products aimed at industrial automation, not research papers. The gap between warehouse pilot and warehouse deployment is closing faster than most workforce planning models assume.

Hacker Wipes Romania’s Entire Land Registry and Backups — Real Estate Market Frozen for a Week

On July 14, a hacker using valid credentials wiped Romania’s national land registry database and its backups after a failed extortion attempt. The country’s entire real-estate market — 150,000 to 170,000 residential transactions annually — froze, with notaries unable to record sales and citizens unable to obtain proof of ownership. One offline backup survived, physically or logically isolated from the compromised credentials, and became the foundation for recovery. Romania’s National Agency for Cadastre announced migration to the government cloud, with restoration targeted for July 22. The same attacker had previously breached Sweden’s e-government portal earlier this year.

Note: Every digitisation project assumes the database will survive. Romania’s didn’t. One offline backup was the difference between a week-long freeze and a permanent loss of national property records. The attacker had already hit Sweden with the same playbook.
